The Herengracht was constructed from 1612 onwards on the initiative of Mayor Frans Hendricksz Oetgens and takes its name from the regents of the city of Amsterdam. The plot was built on in 1648 by Anthonie Oetgens van Waveren (1585-1658), knight, lord of Waveren, Botsbol and Ruyge Wilnis, lieutenant of the militia and several times mayor of Amsterdam.
