The History of De Pijp
The neighborhood that arose behind the Palace for Popular Industry (Paleis voor Volksvlijt) around 1900 was officially called “Buurt YY,” but soon became known as De Pijp. The district quickly developed into a lively and thriving part of the city. Several renowned Dutch writers lived here, including Herman Heijermans, Frederik van Eeden, and Ferdinand Bordewijk. De Pijp was also the birthplace of Dutch cabaret, thanks to Eduard Jacobs. The neighborhood soon earned the nickname “The Latin Quarter” of Amsterdam, a reputation it still enjoys today. Dutch singer André Hazes performed here throughout his life and has been commemorated with a statue at the Albert Cuyp Market. There are various stories about the origin of the name “De Pijp.” In 1892, the area was compared to a drawer full of smoking pipes, from which early-morning streams of workers appeared like clouds emerging from the pipes. Although the exact origin of the name remains uncertain, everyone now refers to the neighborhood as De Pijp—and everyone wants to live there.
