History
Until the end of the 18th century, the area where the Archipel District now stands consisted of dunes and country estates. Later, the Alexander Barracks were built here, and during World War II, a new city hall was constructed on the Patijnlaan, which was never fully completed.
On the site of this city hall, Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill designed Monchyplein in 1986: an ensemble of townhouses and apartments surrounding a green courtyard where classical and modern architecture meet.
Nearly forty years later, the MONCHY transformation project, designed by OZ architects, continues this architectural dialogue. The existing office tower is given a new future. The addition of a light, glass rooftop extension enhances the contrast between the classical base and the contemporary design – with respect for the past and a vision for the future.
