A BIT OF HISTORY – OOSTZANERWERF In the Middle Ages, Oostzanerwerf was located directly on the IJ river. On the dike stood the famous Oostzaner Overtoom, a spot where inland vessels were manually pulled over the dike. Around this point, a harbor developed that became a hub of maritime trade from the 16th century, particularly toward the Baltic Sea. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Oostzanerwerf played a role in the whaling industry. At the time, it was the fifth-largest whaling port in Holland, based on the number of ships. In the southern part of today’s Het Twiske, about ten to twelve blubber cookeries processed whale blubber into lamp oil and baleen for various uses. The area also hosted shipyards and a sailmaker's workshop. In the 19th century, with the construction of the North Sea Canal, the Noorder IJpolder was developed. The harbor and shipyard at Oostzanerwerf retained access to the IJ via Side Canal I. The overtoom was eventually demolished in 1946. In 1966, Oostzanerwerf was annexed by the municipality of Amsterdam, in connection with the construction of the A10 ring road. Since then, it has become part of the Amsterdam-Noord district, while still maintaining its unique character and rich history. Source: Wikipedia
