On the edge of Vlissingen’s historic city centre, on Stenenbeer
and directly opposite Perry’s Dock, lies a place that is deeply rooted in
the city’s memory. Since 1910, this was the site of the post and telegraph office,
a stately building in the Neo-Renaissance style that for decades was a recognisable
feature of the cityscape. It was a place where the city and the world
met, where ‘connection’ took centre stage, both literally and figuratively. After
its demolition in 1991, the site remained undeveloped for a long time, an open space in the
heart of the city.
It was precisely this void that formed the starting point for Nieuwe Post. The desire arose
to give this special location new meaning, not by looking
back to the past, but by understanding its power and translating it into a contemporary
context. What was missing here was not just a building, but an urban
anchor with character, recognisability and quality.
With Nieuwe Post, this site is being given a new purpose that stems from that
conviction. The architecture subtly references the original post office
and thereby restores a sense of continuity to the cityscape.
Not by copying the past, but by carefully interpreting it
and linking it to the demands and aspirations of modern living. Thus, Nieuwe Post has emerged as a contemporary residential building that respects
its history whilst looking clearly to the future. A place where the past
and the future meet, and where Vlissingen once again adds a meaningful
link to its urban narrative. This is how we reconnect the past
with the present.
Nieuwe Post is situated in an exceptional location in Vlissingen. Right
where the historic city centre flows into the maritime
Scheldekwartier, on the Dokje van Perry. Here, you live amidst
urban vibrancy and maritime tranquillity. The city centre, with its
culture, restaurants and everyday amenities, is just round the corner, as are
Bellamypark and the shopping streets. At the same time, the harbour,
the Westerschelde, the beach and Vlissingen’s promenade are all
within easy reach.
The complex comprises 35 flats, ranging from comfortable, cleverly laid-out compact flats of approximately 59m² to exclusive penthouses. Nieuwe Post has been designed for a diverse group of residents. Just as the post office once played a unifying role in the city, this concept is given a contemporary interpretation in Nieuwe Post. The central lobby serves as the building’s living room: a place to meet one another, receive visitors or find information about the town. With 35 flats, a living environment is created in which residents can recognise one another, without this being a given. A place where there is room for social interaction as well as for privacy. The flats are light, carefully laid out and designed to foster a pleasant relationship with the surroundings. Large windows and a clever orientation ensure plenty of natural light and views of both the city and the green inner courtyard.
At the heart of the building lies a sheltered courtyard garden on the roof of the car park. This green space provides a tranquil counterbalance to the city’s dynamism and offers a place for socialising and relaxation. Furthermore, Nieuwe Post is fully all-electric and equipped with sustainable energy solutions and a climate-adaptive design. This creates not only a comfortable living environment, but also one that is future-proof and healthy.
