A BIT OF HISTORY
The Prinses Irenebuurt was built between 1954 and 1958 on a piece of land known as Zandland. This area had been raised with sand before World War II in preparation for housing construction. At that time, the city ended at the Zuider Amstelkanaal, with no pedestrian bridge across it. Zandland was an ideal playground for the children of South Amsterdam.
