Description

19th century mansion located on the Singelpark.

The 'Hogewoerdse Poort' was once located here, a city gate that was part of the Leiden city walls and defenses. On their way to their country estates along the Oude Rijn, the wealthy bourgeoisie left the city here in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century, almost all defenses, including this gate, were demolished and parks with prominent mansions were built. On a sunny day the ladies with parasol, hat and hoop dress and the gentlemen with tailcoats, walking stick and top hats left the stately houses to take a quiet walk and relax in the Plantsoen park.

Even today, this house still has the grandeur and appearance that are reminiscent of these bygone times. Not only the monumental facade and the cast iron garden fence are witnesses of this, but also inside almost all details have been preserved: high ceilings with original stucco in all rooms, the marble corridor with doors with cut glass, the fireplaces in all rooms, en suite doors, stained glass and much more.

The Plantage is part of the Leidse Singelpark, a walking park that surrounds the entire historic center of Leiden. In addition to the original park in front of the door, the street is currently also being redesigned with more greenery and space for pedestrians, and the small square at the back is being turned into a park. Less space for cars, more space for greenery, walkers and cyclists.

This does not mean that it is a problem to park in the vicinity. A permit can be requested and is immediately valid after application. Everything else is within walking or cycling distance: shops, restaurants and culture in the city center. Sports clubs and schools in the Professorenwijk. The bus stops in front of the door and the train stations Leiden CS and Lammeschans can also be reached within 10 minutes by bike.

LAYOUT

Ground floor.
Downstairs you enter through the entrance into a stately hall with immediately to the right a reception room that is so spacious that it can also be used as an office. The dining room at the front offers plenty of space to enjoy an extensive dinner with a large group. And if you want to isolate yourself from the company, you close the en suite doors and take a seat next to the fireplace in the living room. Or just relax on a couch in the adjacent conservatory with a view of the green backyard. On the right side of the house is the kitchen: spacious with an adjoining conservatory with plenty of space for a large breakfast table. And as an extra a very spacious basement with headroom.

1st floor
Three very spacious rooms are located on this floor. At the front the first bedroom with next to it the library. It has two huge book walls that are so high that a ladder is needed to reach the highest bookshelves. At the rear is a second very spacious bedroom with balcony and the bathroom on the other side of the hallway.

2nd floor
The top floor was originally intended for the resident staff. Some time ago, this floor was adapted into an apartment with its own kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and very spacious living room was realized. The original dormer window is still visible at the front, and the beam construction of the mansard roof is also visible, which, together with the light from the Velux windows, creates a beautiful atmosphere.

3rd floor
Very spacious attic with arrangement of the central heating boilers.

Garden
The front garden not only offers the opportunity to place bicycles, but also for a seat. Enjoy a cup of coffee, the view of the park and the walkers who make a round of the Singelpark. The backyard is green and has many trees, making it nice and cool in the hot summer. It can be reached via a back door from both conservatories, but also from the adjacent Veerstraat.
