The canal originated when, starting from 1612, the canal belt was dug in southern direction from the Brouwersgracht. On the side of the Prinsengracht the remains of a lock can be recognized. This lock was necessary because the water of the Prinsengracht (together with the rest of the Jordaan canals) remained on polder level, while the level of the water in the Leliegracht, Keizersgracht and Herengracht was on the higher city level.
