De Deymanstraat is a quiet street in this neighbourhood, situated between Wibautstraat and Weesperzijde, near the Amstel. It’s lovely to take a stroll here under the trees and past the waterside terraces. Just across the Amstel Bridge lies De Pijp with its lively Albert Cuyp Market. All amenities are within walking or cycling distance, including well-known cafés and restaurants such as Hesp, Bam Boa, Café Weesper, Rijssel, Ysbreeker, Baut Oost, Canvas (Volkshotel) and Dauphine, various theatres including Theater Carré and the Dutch National Opera & Ballet, city parks including Sarphatipark, Oosterpark and Park Frankendael, and various (local) shops. A large Albert Heijn supermarket is located within walking distance. Very easily accessible by public transport and by car. The connection to the city is excellent, including the tram and metro. The Wibautstraat and Weesperplein metro stations are within walking distance, offering a fast connection to both Amstel Station and Central Station. By car, you can reach the A10 ring road within 5 minutes, and by bike, the city centre is just 10 minutes away. The seller explains What makes the current occupant so happy living here, and why has she decided to sell the property? The seller explains. When did you buy the flat and why did you decide to buy it at the time? As a former tenant of the De Key housing association, I was given the opportunity to buy this flat in 2007. It was decided by a lottery. I was very lucky because there were lots of applicants. I came first in the draw. I knew a Portuguese carpenter called Carlos who built the cupboards for me. As I didn’t have a storage cupboard – that space was incorporated into the rest of the flat – I asked him to make tall and deep cupboards, so that I could easily store a few suitcases or a built-in television. What makes living in this flat and in this neighbourhood so pleasant? It’s a lovely flat to live in. It’s very energy-efficient. It retains heat very well, so you don’t need to heat it much. There’s plenty of natural light in the flat. You can read a book anywhere in the flat during the day with natural light. The neighbours are friendly and quiet. It is a very good place to live in this city. The neighbourhood has been completely revitalised over the last 20 years. Many buildings in the area have been renovated. They have also completely transformed the Ysbreeker pub, and it has turned out beautifully. I lived there myself until 2013. I’d cycle straight into the city past the Amstel Hotel, Carré and the Magere Brug. If I wanted to go to the market for vegetables and the like, I’d go to the Albert Cuyp one day and the Dappermarkt the next. I used to go running in the Oosterpark. There are always lots of parakeets flying around there and people practising Tai Chi. In the nearby Pijp neighbourhood, there are plenty of shops, such as Hema. Actually, everything is quite close by. Albert Heijn is just round the corner. Lidl is on the other side of the Amstel. There are metro connections to Nieuwmarkt and Central Station, as well as to Amstel Station. There are two tram lines (Weesperplein and Ruyschstraat) that cross the city from east to west. You can drive out of the city in no time. The Weesperzijde is very popular and is one of those neighbourhoods where you can actually see continuous improvement. You keep seeing lovely new restaurants and bars popping up in the area. Like recently, when we went to try The Greek Embassy (Weesperzijde 85hs). Excellent food and efficient service. Restaurant Loulou might just have the best pizzas in Amsterdam. Also, Café Bica has just opened. It’s so new that we haven’t had a chance to try the cappuccino yet. But a little further east, near the OLVG hospital, there are now cosy, bustling restaurants on Beukenweg that weren’t there before. That adjacent part of the city is also getting better and better. I started letting out the flat in 2013. Since then, expats from various countries have lived there on two-year leases. Why are you moving out/why is the property for sale? One of the reasons I want to sell the flat is because letting is becoming increasingly difficult for private individuals and small investors like me. The other reason is that my girlfriend lives near Arnhem. What’s more, there’s a possibility that we might move abroad in the future. And there’s another reason. When I moved in, I was 36. Now I’m 55. My interests have changed somewhat in the intervening years. Whereas I used to be drawn to the dynamism of Amsterdam, these days I enjoy walks in the woods. I’m confident you won’t regret buying this flat. The stairs will keep you fit, and everything that’s great about Amsterdam is just around the corner.
