Description

In the heart of the Jordaan, in a prime location, we offer this apartment located in the monumental former warehouse “De Hoop,” dating from 1650. The property has two levels and includes a storage room on the ground floor. LAYOUT The apartment is situated on the third floor of a historic warehouse with a rich history. You enter the home via the communal staircase. Upon entering, you step into the bright living room with a semi-open kitchen at the rear. At the front is the atmospheric seating area with a beautiful gas fireplace, ideal for colder days. French doors provide access to a charming French balcony with a unique view over the Lauriergracht. The kitchen is fully equipped with various built-in appliances, including an oven, dishwasher, a 6-burner gas stove, and a professional-style faucet. On this floor you will also find a separate toilet and a storage space under the stairs. An internal staircase leads to the bedroom, located in the roof ridge of the building. The freestanding bathtub forms a striking and stylish centerpiece here. The bathroom is equipped with a shower and a natural stone washbasin. At the rear, there is also a spacious walk-in closet offering ample storage space. From the bedroom, a roof window provides access to the roof terrace. On the ground floor, the property has its own storage room and there is a shared bicycle storage area. The entire apartment is finished with a wooden floor and is heated via a central heating system. PAKHUIS DE HOOP Lauriergracht 118 is listed in the national heritage register as a warehouse with a later simplified stepped gable from 1650 (monument number 3232). The façade stone with the inscription “Aº 1650,” visible in the photos, confirms this construction year. The name “De Hoop” is no coincidence. Before the introduction of house numbers at the end of the eighteenth century, buildings—especially warehouses—were identified by a façade stone with a name or image. “De Hoop” thus literally functioned as the building’s address. That the warehouse was built during the Dutch Golden Age fits well within its historical context. Pakhuis De Hoop is a modest but exceptionally well-preserved example of this era. AREA The Jordaan itself was developed from around 1612 as a working-class district just outside the affluent canal belt. It housed functions that were not desirable next to the elegant Herengracht: crafts, breweries, dye works, tanneries, and storage facilities. In practice, the Jordaan grew into a lively working-class neighborhood where craftsmen, sailors, small entrepreneurs, and traders lived and worked side by side. Along the canals, warehouses and workshops were built where goods from all over the world were stored. The sturdy façades, high ceilings, hoisting beams, and functional structures still reflect this trading history today. The Lauriergracht is one of the most atmospheric canals in the Jordaan and features many monumental buildings. Over the centuries, the area has inspired artists and writers, including George Hendrik Breitner and Govert Flinck. The canal also holds a special place in literature thanks to Multatuli, who begins his famous novel Max Havelaar with the iconic line: “I am a coffee broker and live on Lauriergracht No. 37.” DETAILS • Living area approx. 64 m² (in accordance with NEN-2580/BBMI, measurement report available) • Apartment in a historic monument called “De Hoop” • Energylabel C • French balcony at the front and roof terrace (without official permission) • Active homeowners’ association, professionally managed • Service costs €352.50 per month, multi-year maintenance plan available • Delivery in consultation, short-term availability possible • Notary of buyer’s choice within Amsterdam. The canal was created during the major expansion of Amsterdam and is part of the Jordaan, where many streets and canals are named after flowers and plants. This historical naming tradition still contributes to the character and identity of the neighborhood.
