Background of the Area The GWL site is a residential area with 600 homes, built between 1995 and 1998 on the former municipal waterworks site. It is one of the first ecological neighborhoods in the Netherlands. Sustainable materials were used during construction. The homes have low energy consumption and incorporate water-saving measures. The GWL site (Municipal Waterworks Site) has an industrial history. Between 1851 and 1994, it was used as a waterworks facility. Five historic buildings have been preserved from that time: the neighborhood management building, the Warehouse, the Pump Engine Building (now in use as a café-restaurant), the Windketel (now operating as a hotel), and on the square next to the home stands the large white Water Tower, still used for water storage with a capacity of 1,280 m³. The six-hectare inner courtyard area is car-free and characterized by green hedges, lawns, apple trees, fountains, and community vegetable gardens where residents can grow their own produce. According to statistics from the Municipality of Amsterdam, the neighborhood ranks every year among the top areas in the city in terms of resident satisfaction and happiness. The Staatsliedenbuurt is known for its trendy coffee spots, cafés, restaurants, and the lively Limburg Stirumplein. Just a one-minute walk from the property lies the popular Westerpark, a wonderful place for walking (with or without a dog), visiting the petting zoo with children, jogging, or simply relaxing. The park is home to the cultural site Westergasfabriek. Westerpark is home to the Westergasfabriek, a cultural hotspot where festivals and markets take place year-round, especially in summer. From culinary events such as Rollende Keukens to music festivals like Milkshake and major dance festivals such as Awakenings, there is always a reason to celebrate in Westerpark. On the Westergas site you will find trendy cafés, an ice cream parlor, excellent eateries, galleries, a cinema, various clubs, and a brand-new hotel, Conscious Hotel Westerpark, where you can enjoy delicious cocktails in the bar called Kantoor.
