History of “De Pijp”
The new neighborhood that emerged behind the Palace of Popular Diligence around 1900 was officially called “Buurt YY,” but soon became known as De Pijp. The area quickly developed into a vibrant district. Several famous Dutch writers rented rooms here, including Herman Heijermans, Frederik van Eeden, and Bordewijk. Eduard Jacobs laid the foundations for Dutch cabaret in De Pijp. The neighborhood soon became known as the “Quartier Latin” of Amsterdam, a reputation it still holds today. André Hazes frequently performed here and has been immortalized with a statue at the Albert Cuyp Market.
There are several stories about the origin of the nickname “De Pijp.” In 1892, the district was compared to a pipe drawer containing long, broad pipes that, early each morning, “blew out” living clouds of people heading to work. Whatever the true origin of the name may be, everyone now knows and loves De Pijp — and everyone wants to live there.
In short: A fantastic apartment in a wonderful location!
