Bronkhorst The smallest town in the Netherlands (almost, there are still a couple of towns competing for the title) also deserves the title ‘most charming town’, because Bronkhorst seems to have flowed straight from Anton Pieck's brush. Bronkhorst has a very high monument density, making it a popular destination for (cycling) tourists. Like a true open-air museum, the cobbled streets lead us from one brick surprise to the next; from the imposing 17th-century manor house Huis Ophemert (or the Hoge Huys) via the various 19th-century (manor) farms to the cute chapel - it is a sweet shop for lovers of cultural heritage. Because of the small population and the exceptional character of the little town, it is ‘us knows us’ and everyone has a soft spot for this place. Bronkhorst is incomparably beautiful all year round, but at Christmas time, when the town is enveloped in Christmas atmosphere and the special puppet show (Christmas Carol) in the church is added to this. Nature around Bronkhorst is magnificent and the network of walking and cycling paths is extensive, so a pair of walking shoes and a good bike are a must here. Along the dike flows the river IJssel and at the end of the Veerweg the ferry Brummen-Bronkhorst ferries, where you can board by bike, car, motorbike or on foot. For city bustle, Zutphen is 15 minutes away, Doetinchem and Doesburg are 20 minutes away and Arnhem is half an hour by car. Ground floor The formal entrance is of course at the front, but here in Bronkhorst we simply enter from the back; next to the - now fully glazed - barn doors, via the former stable door. In the hall, with floor screed in a mix of shades of grey, to the left is a hall closet with the connections for washer and dryer. Then the cloakroom and the WC with hand basin; black sanitaryware and fittings have been chosen throughout, giving the house a clean and minimalist ambience. Furthermore, the beautifully styled bathroom, complete with cast concrete bathtub - overlooking the lush greenery outside -, sink and a generous walk-in shower. The Z-shaped living room has an open programme and is a sunny space due to the abundance of natural light let in all around. The room is also illuminated by a sophisticated lighting plan, with spotlights in all the right places. On the floor, terracotta floor tiles with underfloor heating. Seats everywhere under the estrikken, as they should be in a farmhouse, and the open staircase leads to the upper floor. The partition doors are filled with glass and open to the sun terrace at the rear. Opposite the generous seating area is a highly efficient burning gas stove in the classic fireplace with old Dutch tiles, now beautifully contrasted by the Lounge Chair, a vintage gem from designer Ray Eames. The kitchen is a statement in itself; an entirely handmade and designed unit for this house, with honed composite stone worktops and all the desirable luxuries, in the form of built-in appliances such as dishwasher, hot air Steam oven and an extra-wide induction hob with downdraft extraction (Siemens). There is a 3-in-1 boiling, sparkling chilled water tap for a quick cup of tea or pasta, and that this is a kitchen for bourgondians is betrayed by the large Liebherr side-by-side with wine climate cabinet and the cosy bar at the head of the kitchen island. The bedroom is in the former upstairs room: a romantic nest with an opened ceiling and a bathroom with WC, washbasin and sun shower. Your wardrobe has plenty of room in the extremely nice, crafted, custom-made built-in wardrobes. Upstairs Upstairs a bright landing with two spacious and tastefully finished bedrooms, and above all lots of storage space in the built-in cupboards. Outside space The garden is really impressive, without being manicured with nail scissors. It surrounds the house - so there is always a place in the sun - with lawns, borders and terraces and a colourful selection of flowers, trees, plants, shrubs and hedges. There is a classic standard orchard on the left (for those watching on the right) and at the back, behind the driveway, is the chicken shed and a spacious sun terrace. ‘Chicken barn’ is too irreverent, as this extremely beautiful barn (15 m²) has four windows with rod division and overhead lights and is multifunctional; the bicycles and lawn mower are good here, but a Finnish sauna would not be out of place here either, as there is a retail destination on this plot, a shop could also be located here.
