A Piece of History
Until the late 18th century, the area where the Archipel District now stands was a dune landscape dotted with estates. Later, it became home to the Alexanderkazerne barracks, and during World War II a new city hall was built on the Patijnlaan, which was never fully completed.
On this same site, Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill designed the Monchyplein in 1986: an ensemble of townhouses and apartments around a green courtyard that seamlessly blends classical and modern architecture.
Almost forty years later, the MONCHY transformation project, designed by OZ Architects, continues this architectural dialogue. The existing office tower is being given a new life. The addition of a light, glass extension strengthens the contrast between the classical base and the contemporary design — honoring the past while embracing the future.
