About Ens:
Ens was the name for the southern part of the former island of Schokland, which had two historic mounds where people lived. Schokland was once an island in the Zuiderzee, frequently affected by flooding due to its low elevation. In 1859, King Willem III ordered the evacuation of the island. In 1942, the Noordoostpolder was drained, and Schokland became part of the mainland.
Today, you can visit Ens and the Schokland Museum. Since residents were required to demolish their homes back then, no old houses remain—only the Enser Church from 1834 still stands. Schokland, along with 1,000 hectares of surrounding farmland, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. Ens is now protected and frequently visited by tourists.
Well-known Dutch figures born in Ens include speed skater Evert van Benthem and author Laura Maaskant (LEEF!).
With a long history and deep roots in the region, Ens offers a unique living environment rich in culture and history—making it a truly special place to live.
