Description

Country living near Enschede Enjoy the best of both worlds in this elegant Saxon-style country home. You dream of a warm, family-oriented house in a rural style — a life close to nature, yet within easy reach of city conveniences. Then this charming country residence (built in 2016), beautifully situated in the distinctive Twente landscape, could very well be your new home. A life of peace and freedom, surrounded by nature yet close to the city. The property borders the historic Hooge Boekel estate, founded in the mid-19th century by textile manufacturer Van Heek. Along this quiet stretch of Lonnekerweg, a small but close-knit neighbourhood has developed over the past decade — a place where mutual connection, friendliness and respect for each other’s privacy are highly valued. Heart for the region The current owners deliberately chose an architect (Niels Wigger) and a traditional building company (Wolbert & Hulsmeijers) with a shared love for the region, to bring their vision of home to life. The result combines timeless rural style with modern comfort. With its characteristic Saxon features, the house fits perfectly into its surroundings. Inside, a light and modern interior is subtly enhanced by oak vintage details — illuminated niches, shelves, and finely crafted wall and ceiling finishes. Ground floor Behind the front door In the hallway, situated at the side of the house, you’ll find a spacious toilet room with wall-hung WC and washbasin, as well as a coat area and the staircase to the first floor (oak treads and white risers). There is also access to the utility room and storage area. Continuing through, you enter the dining room with its adjoining open-plan kitchen. The entire ground floor features underfloor heating and is finished with XL vintage-look tiles in warm neutral tones of sand and taupe — a perfect match with the white plastered walls. Dining room & TV room Generous, comfortable and cosy — that’s the best way to describe the dining room. Large windows create a strong connection with the surrounding landscape. French doors at the rear open to a paved terrace with far-reaching views, while a wide sliding door on the side leads to another terrace. A glass partition with industrial-style framing separates the adjoining TV room — reminiscent of the traditional endskamer, the extended room in a farmhouse reserved for the older generation. The high ceiling is finished in oak, and the rear wall is entirely glass. A pellet stove makes the space warm and inviting in no time. Kitchen & utility room Back in the dining area, the open-plan kitchen is sleek and modern, featuring handleless high-gloss white cabinetry, a black granite worktop and a cooking island with breakfast bar. The built-in Siemens appliances include a wine cooler and coffee machine. A cosy oak-clad niche forms a small lounge spot. Next to the minimalist mantelpiece with an integrated wood-burning fire is a built-in bench. The kitchen provides access to the utility room, which has an oak-fronted kitchenette with a concrete worktop and ample built-in storage. A door opens directly onto the yard. First floor & attic Sleeping & bathing The landing and all four bedrooms are finished with wood-look laminate flooring. All opening windows are fitted with insect screens, and extra storage has been created behind the knee walls. The bathroom, also with underfloor heating, features the same XL floor tiles as the ground floor. There’s a large walk-in shower with two shower systems, a freestanding bathtub, a double vanity unit in high-gloss white, and a wall-hung toilet. The spacious master bedroom has a high ceiling, and the dormer window has been transformed into a dressing area with custom-made wardrobes. It’s a beautiful place to wake up with the first rays of sunlight streaming in. This floor also offers two large children’s bedrooms, plus a slightly smaller fourth room that still feels pleasantly spacious. From the landing, a retractable ladder provides access to the attic storage space. Cellar level The house is fully basemented, offering a wealth of space divided into several rooms — including a central hall, laundry, drying room, storage area and wardrobe room. The cellar features white panel doors and anthracite floor tiles throughout. But there’s much more to discover… Bar Behind a rustic brick wall with stable-style window and solid oak doors lies a true bar — a cosy pub-style space, perfect for parties or watching football together. The bar has a professional tap installation, and the floor is laid with warm herringbone ceramic parquet. Fitness room & sauna Another room in the cellar is equipped as a fitness area, complete with adjoining wellness facilities. Here you’ll find a luxurious wood-fired Finnish sauna (Helo), constructed from solid pine, along with a shower cabin, oak vanity with washbasin, and urinal. Outbuildings Detached brick barn The exceptionally spacious and well-insulated barn complements the style of the main house perfectly. The 22 solar panels on its roof easily cover the electricity needs of the current residents — a family with three growing children and a dog. The front section, used as a garage, workshop and storage area, features double doors and a handy loft. The building is equipped with power (including three-phase), water and heating. The drainage system for wastewater is pre-installed beneath the crawl space. Both from inside and outside, you can access the large office at the rear, finished with anthracite tiles. French doors open onto a generous covered terrace with an oak ceiling. “It’s one of our favourite spots,” the owners say. “Perfect for barbecues with friends, with a lovely open view over the meadows.” On the left side of the barn is a lean-to shelter. In front of the garage is a paved parking area with space for at least three cars, located next to an EV charging point. This outbuilding offers plenty of possibilities — it could easily be converted into a living space with a lounge, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Or transformed into a workshop, art studio, home office or practice space. The options are endless. Chicken coop with run Even the chicken coop behind the house has been built in the same style, with a chestnut-wood fence enclosing the run. It’s also permitted to extend the existing outbuildings with an additional animal shelter if desired. Garden The garden has been designed to complement the surrounding landscape — low-maintenance, with several terraces and seating areas, open sightlines, privacy, and ample parking space. The driveway begins between two brick pillars with an oak gate and is surfaced with grey gravel. On the left, nostalgic lanterns line the way; on the right, a neatly trimmed beech hedge. The charming courtyard is paved with basalt cobblestones. Several borders, mainly at the front of the house, are filled with perennial plants. The small orchard yields apples, pears and plums. A large lawn flows seamlessly into the surrounding meadows, while multiple terraces — both open-air and covered — make it easy to enjoy the outdoors throughout the seasons. A natural pond is integrated into the garden, blending beautifully with the landscape. Accessibility A safe and quick cycle route leads directly to the city centre of Enschede, with all its amenities. In just over ten minutes by bike, you can be in the heart of the city. The villa district of Stokhorst (a 30 km/h zone) is less than five minutes away and offers a full shopping centre, medical facilities, primary schools and sports accommodations. Access to the A35 and A1 motorways is also quick and convenient.
