About Hondón de las Nieves
Hondón de las Nieves is a municipality in the Vinalopó Medio region, in the province of Alicante, part of the Valencia region of Spain.
History
In 1246, Christian forces conquered Hondón from the Moors. Until 1839, it was part of the jurisdiction of Aspe; afterward, it became an independent municipality together with Hondón de los Frailes. In 1926, the two towns were administratively separated.
Traditionally, the economy was based on agriculture, with grapes as the main crop. However, the real estate sector has been steadily growing, with more and more foreigners settling in the area. The region also hosts quarries, sand pits, and cement factories.
Geography
Hondón spans 68.85 km² and is nestled in a small valley, sheltered by the Crevillent mountains. The area is rich in pine, almond, and olive trees, as well as vineyards. Places worth visiting include La Cuesta and La Cruz – perfect for relaxing. The walking trail "Ruta del Alto Pelao" lets you discover Mediterranean flora such as pine trees, juniper, thyme, and rosemary. Local fauna includes wild boar, foxes, partridges, hares, rabbits, lizards, and eagle owls.
