ENVIRONMENT Het Plein 1992, a design by former government architect Jo Coenen, is named after the important year 1992 for Maastricht, when the Treaty on European Union was signed in the Government Building, which, among other things, marked the arrival of the euro as a single currency in a number of European countries was decided. The paving of the square contains tiles with the € sign alternating with the year 1992. The name of the Céramique district is taken from the Société Céramique pottery factory that was previously located here. In the original plans for Céramique, the square was usually referred to as 'north node' or, because of its elevated location on the Maas, 'city balcony'. Plein 1992 is located in the northern part of the district between the Maas and the bend in Avenue Céramique. The High Bridge connects Plein 1992 on the right bank of the Maas with the City Park on the left bank. On the south side, the square offers a view over the Charles Eyck Park. On the east side, the square offers a view of the Tower of Siza (by the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza) and the La Fortezza building (by the Swiss Mario Botta), both of which are not directly adjacent to the square. Thanks to the direct connection to the monumental Wyck district, this apartment is very centrally located, with the Center Céramique city library and De Bordenhal theater hall with adjacent Café Zuid and the green Charles Eyck Park with Stoa residential complex on the opposite side.
