Description

Looking for a unique place to live, work, and enjoy life? A place where history is truly alive? We have great news for you! You now have the opportunity to become the proud owner of a one-of-a-kind, monumental home in the heart of Zaandam. This charming semi-detached house, dating back to 1730, offers an impressive 145 m² of living space, four bedrooms, and sits on a generous plot of 329 m². The spacious backyard borders directly on the beautiful river Zaan and comes with its very own private jetty. Here, you can live peacefully by the water, while still having all amenities within easy reach. Both the city center of Zaandam and the train station are within walking distance. A Home with History This national monument carries a rich past. The current owner proudly describes how he still admires the house every time he sees it – a property to fall in love with instantly, and one where you will feel at home the moment you walk in. The History of Westzijde 210 The property is part of the complex at numbers 204–210, well-known among locals as the former orphanage of the Dutch Reformed Church. The exact construction date is unknown, but archives show that merchant Claes Cornelis Louw purchased the property in 1733. In 1798, the executors of his daughter Janneke Claes Louw’s estate sold the house to Pieter Wit from Oostzaandam for 3,750 guilders (approximately €1,650). From 1832 to 1874, the house served as an orphanage and charity home. Around 1875, plot 210 was merged with number 208, and the originally wooden buildings received a brick façade. With features such as a hipped roof and a modified cornice, this house remains a valuable addition to the historic streetscape. Location and Accessibility Zaandam’s city center, including the lively Gedempte Gracht, is just a short walk away, offering shops, restaurants, gyms, and more. Nearby, you’ll also find the Verkade Factory (with a bakery and library), the Bullekerk (a cultural hotspot), and several specialty shops. Schools, playgrounds, and childcare facilities are also close by. The train station is within walking distance, providing direct connections to Amsterdam Central, Schiphol, and Utrecht. Highways A7, A8, and A10 are easily accessible, making Amsterdam only a 15-minute drive away. Space and Charm One of the first things you’ll notice is the abundance of space. Spread over three levels, the home features a bright living room, a separate kitchen, four bedrooms, a bathroom, and two toilets in total. The living room is both atmospheric and light-filled, with a Wanders wood stove, ceilings adorned with original wooden beams, and a stunning mosaic parquet floor. A special feature is the original wall at the short end of the living room. French doors open directly onto the spacious backyard. The kitchen, accessible from both the hall and the living room, is fully equipped with an induction hob, extractor hood, dishwasher, combi-oven, fridge-freezer, and a stylish mixer tap. The kitchen also provides access to the backyard. First floor: a spacious landing, three bedrooms, and a complete bathroom (renovated in 2018) with a bathtub, double sink, walk-in shower, and second toilet. Second floor: a generous landing with two skylights, a fourth bedroom, and a storage area with connections for a washing machine, dryer, and central heating system. Additional highlights include a heat pump, six solar panels (installed in 2023), and a high-efficiency boiler (2020). This historic home is not only full of character but also energy-efficient and future-proof. Outdoor Space The enclosed front garden faces west and offers lovely views of the Westzijde. From both the living room and kitchen, you step into the large, beautifully maintained backyard of approx. 260 m², situated on the east side. There is plenty of room for multiple seating areas and comfortable lounge spots. A detached storage unit is located at the front of the garden. This is the perfect garden to enjoy outdoor living with family and friends. Start your day with the morning sun and end it in complete tranquility – all from your private jetty on the Zaan. This is not just any garden; this is your very own waterfront retreat. Note from the owner: "From my own jetty, I continually enjoy the peace and the stunning surroundings. The Zaan is always in motion – it feels as if it tells me a new story each time."
