The front façade of this Renaissance-era mansion (1615) is nothing short of extraordinary. Its stepped gable – the so-called Dordrecht style – was inspired by the stately townhouses of prosperous Dordrecht at the time. Blocked relieving arches, pilasters with Ionic capitals and sculpted heads between the windows, profiled natural stone string courses, wrought-iron wall anchors and a crowning pilaster resting on a masked console form an architectural composition that is both functional and highly decorative, a clear statement of wealth and status. Many original details have been carefully preserved, including the metal railing with natural stone posts at the front step. The metal brackets flanking the front door are silent witnesses to times of extreme high water. Once part of a sliding barrier system used in combination with sandbags, they served to keep floodwater at bay. Since the completion of the Delta Works, this is no longer a concern. Inside, the atmosphere is equally distinctive. Sliding sash windows with pulley systems, imposing oak trusses, robust beamed ceilings, stained-glass windows, panelled doors, graceful arches, a long entrance hall and tiled floors together create a sense of history that is rarely encountered today. On the top floor, a charming “tower room”, also known as the crow’s nest, offers a small window with magnificent views over the harbour and surrounding waters. Here, the roof trusses and construction are fully exposed, adding to the room’s unique character. Living and Working Under One Roof The picturesque, low-traffic Havendam is renowned for its row of beautifully preserved historic façades, yet number 8 stands out by a wide margin. The current owner acquired this characterful townhouse in 2014, drawn by its striking frontage, its unique waterside location and the generous living space ideally suited to a blended family. The previous occupant, an architect with a home office, had already introduced several interior modifications. Over the past four centuries, residents from many different backgrounds have lived and worked here. Historical research traces the property back to the late eighteenth century, when merchant Anthony Gerritsz van Ooijen resided here, presumably with his wife Huigje van der Zwaan. Until the early twentieth century, the stately building remained in family ownership, albeit with changing tenants. At times it accommodated two families; at others, residential use on the upper floors was combined with commercial activity on the ground floor. Since 2009, the building has been used exclusively as a residence, although it still carries a dual designation allowing for both living and business activities within defined parameters. Two Addresses, Endless Possibilities In 1966, Havendam 8 was designated a national monument. Maintenance in keeping with its historical character is encouraged, while alterations to the exterior are not permitted. Few would argue otherwise, as this authentic façade is well worth preserving. The rear façade presents itself in a restrained and elegant simplicity. One of the property’s key advantages is its excellent accessibility from the rear. This side has its own address, Gedempte Spui 3F, and is also developed, together forming a highly practical and versatile ensemble with Havendam 8. At the rear, there is also a private garage box with an accompanying parking space, a rare and valuable asset in a densely built historic town centre. Ground Floor A short flight of steps leads to the front door, opening into the long entrance hall. From here, the hallway first leads to the spacious living room overlooking the harbour. This atmospheric space features impressive original ceiling beams, elegant arches and a floor of old clinker bricks laid in cement. Further towards the rear is a second living room and a closed kitchen. The conservatory, added at a later stage and fitted with double glazing and a skylight, offers a surprisingly green outlook. Between them lies a fully equipped bathroom, complete with a sauna. The second floor is reached via a straight staircase and again offers two large bedrooms and a bathroom with shower, washbasin and toilet. From this level, two staircases lead to the front and rear sections of the top floor. At the harbour side is the previously mentioned crow’s nest, boasting panoramic views over the water. The rear section consists of one large open space, currently used as attic storage. The exposed roof structure lends this floor a particularly distinctive and atmospheric character. Behind Havendam 8 – Gedempte Spui 3F This address comprises a light-filled, single-storey building with a flat roof fitted with solar panels. The angular structure of approximately 60 square metres falls outside the monument designation. Inside, a central hall connects two wings, and the building is equipped with a kitchenette, toilet and shower facilities. The space lends itself perfectly to a variety of uses, such as an office, practice space, studio, workshop or hobby room. Commercial rental is also a viable option. On adjacent municipal land stands a complex of five garage units, one of which, including a parking space, belongs to this property. From this public area, Havendam 8 can also be accessed via a private, lockable double wooden gate. The Back Garden The wooden rear gate opens into a fully redesigned garden. Although largely paved with large grey tiles and reclaimed bricks, the garden feels surprisingly green. According to the current owner, occasional waiting times for the ferry or brief delays at the Heinenoord Tunnel do occur, usually following an incident, but only very rarely.
